T h e latter problem is greatly minimized by use of special self-gripping screwdrivers. 10 Rats and cats may present special problems, because they will sometimes actively try to remove an electrode-connector assembly from their head by pulling on it with their feet and by trying to catch it in cage wiring.
Because brain neurons exhibit EPSPs and IPSPs, we can readily appreciate the importance of synaptic interactions. If the number of afferent impulses to a brain neuron fluctuates, similar fluctuation could be expected to develop in neurotransmitter release by that neuron. Consequently, there would be fluctuations in the MP of adjacent neurons that respond to that transmitter. Similar processes occurring in all cortical cells would combine to form what we call the EEG. Such reasoning permits some speculative correlation of the time course of MP changes with that of EEG waves.
